![]() In contrast, the Jaylah makeup was three and a half hours every day. That one was relatively quick at two hours. How long did that take to apply to Idris Elba each day? Idris worked out how far he needed to push the performance in order for it to translate. As he gets more human, he doesn’t have to push too far. ![]() There are aspects of the makeup you just can’t diminish, so he had to amplify his performance based on what stages of Krall he was. ![]() When you do tests you get a sense of how dense your silicon prosthetics should be, if you can make things softer to allow their brow movements to read more, and how to get them to emote better. Actors need to work with you just like you need to work with them, and the key is multiple testing sessions. If you don’t have a performance than the best you have is some interesting photos to get out of it. ![]() You don’t have a character until their performance is coming through the makeup. How did you capture that balance of facial articulation without burying the actor too much? Joel Harlow (center) applying one of his makeup designs for 'Star Trek Beyond'. We made sure to give him a little bit of Klingon. We also didn’t want to directly replicate other Star Trek aliens, but there are preexisting Trek alien designs incorporated into Krall too. Krall's swarm quickly crippled the Enterprise. Early in the film, the Enterprise warped into a trap set by Krall so that he could retrieve an ancient artifact that would complete a weapon he intended to use against the United Federation of Planets. There were also lizard elements in Krall too - gila monsters, specifically. Star Trek Beyond finally showed the Constitution-class USS Enterprise execute a saucer separation. Deep sea life is fascinating from a design perspective lots of fins. Pegg, an outspoken pop culture nerd, was still keen on keeping the spirit of 'Star Trek' alive. By extension, a lot of the alien characters we designed for Beyond were aquatic in nature. He had to be an amalgam of a human and any numbers of species. In the context of the story, he starts as a human being but he’s trying to extend his life by draining genetic material from his prisoners, and the primary prisoners he has access to are different aliens. If you see an alien walking by out of focus in the background or in close-up, that silhouette needs to pop. If something doesn’t read that way then it’s not memorable. He had to read strong and villainous but also had to compliment Idris Elba’s performance without inhibiting him. We started with the most extreme version of his corrupt humanoid alien state. We spent most of our efforts on the Krall design. Meanwhile, crickets from everyone else we've ever met at Starfleet. Was it more difficult creating Krall because he was the lead villain? Plus, when Kirk asks her for a job as vice-admiral, she must not be interviewing a ton of candidates, because she all but hands him the incredibly important gig, on the spot. When the Enterprise crew attempt to halt the station's annihilation, she (and the presumably thousands of Starfleet members based there) are nowhere to be seen. ![]() Beyond is set during the storied five-year mission to "boldly go where no man has gone before," and part of the action does take place on the massive Starbase Yorktown, but who really works there? The most important figure we meet is a new character–Commodore Paris (Shohreh Aghdashloo)–and she seems pretty hands-off. True, Kirk has been disobeying orders since the '60s, but there were always orders–or at least, a lot of video conference calls with higher-ups at the Federation. One of the primary differences between Star Trek and Star Wars, is that Star Trek has always been far more rooted in bureaucracy. ![]()
